Introduction: "Social development project Jeffreys Bay"

Jeffreys Bay home to the perfect wave and endless summers, what a place to stay for a couple of weeks working on your tan while helping the local community improve their living conditions. See you down in J Bay for a life changing experience. Working with disadvantaged children and people affected by aids is the main aim of this project.

This project also offers the following:
Pre-School Volunteers - Work with children from 6 months to six years old, playing games, singing songs and exchanging cultures.
Volunteer Teachers - Teaching together with local teachers enhancing the learning experience of the local children.
Sports Development - Training together with local coaches improving sports in the community.

Location: Offering endless beaches and endless summers, Jeffreys Bay is designed for the ordinary, unhurried, unworried, sun-seeking, fun loving person. Locals reckon that Jeffreys Bay was known as the place of dreaming, and it's easy to see why. With miles of seemingly endless ivory sand, littered with the largest variety of shells washed up by the tide, and some of the best bathing beaches - it's a special place for any beach bum. Jeffreys Bay or J-bay as it is affectionately known, is sandwiched between the scenic garden route and sunshine coast - so called as this region has more sunshine hours than any other.

Our gloriously temperate climate has a mere 5 degree midday difference between summer and winter, with a summer maximum average temp of 27 degs and minimum average temp of 19 degs. The summers are warm with a very temperate humidity level. Winters are mild and pleasant, and it is significant that water sports are practised year-round.

Our bay is the meeting point where the warm Indian Ocean current mingles with the waters of the cold Atlantic, creating unique conditions for an incredible diversity of marine life. Dolphins are an almost daily sighting with the southern right whale coming to clave between July and September putting on a show with their courtship rituals.

J-bay is home to the perfect wave! With its unique combination of beautiful beaches, endless summers, abundant shells, white gold (calamari) and relaxed lifestyle, its no wonder this town has become world renown.

Another International attraction is the Billabong Surfing Festival in July each year when surfers from all over the world come to enjoy these flawless formations of rolling surf.

The safe beaches are perfect for bathing and all water sports, making it a populat weekend getaway and holiday destination.

The Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum houses an impressive and beautiful collection of local shells gathered on the beaches of Jeffreys Bay, as well as shells from other countries. Visitors are welcome to collect shells which are varied and plentiful.

What would J-bay be without some sort of acknowledgement to surfing and to all the surfers that have graced its waves over time? The Surf Museum is an epic way to discover where, when and how surfing started, and to understand where this little seaside town fits into the whole culture.

Between May and August each year, the low pressure systems that moves across the cape, generate a swell that rolls around the headland of cape St Francis and into Jeffreys Bay, creating what has been described as the best right hand break in the world.

Volunteers must arrange their flights to and from Port Elizabeth airport.

Getting to Project: Volunteers will be collected by our driver Shane at Port Elizabeth Airport and Transferred to All Africa J Bay Lodge in Jeffreys Bay.
On completion of the project volunteers will be transferred back to the airport by All Africa Volunteers.

Project: There are various community based projects within walking distance of where you will be staying that you can be involved in, in different ways.

Madiba Bay crèche -
The school has 2 permanently employed care givers who are very dedicated but lack resources such as age specific teaching aides. The volunteer will therefore be expected to assist in a very creative manner making use of the most basic equipment to fulfill the daily program objectives.

Presently there are 25 children to the 2 teachers and this brings capacity problems in terms of human resources. The volunteer will be of great help here in order to run smaller classes based on age or special needs.

A primary help will be obtaining financial aid. This will allow the teachers access to material (photostats, paper, books, crayons etc.) to use in the classroom situation. Another area is to create a project to teach the children how to help themselves through the environment - growing vegetables to eat, flowers to sell etc.

There is also an opportunity to establish a link with an established Montessori school in town and to use ideas, themes etc. from this school. Also to bring the schools together by having outings to each others schools or going to the beach together.

The school receives no grants or funding of any sort from local or national government (the school was built with foreign donations). Infrastructure is therefore basic but functional, salaries low and teacher aids minimal. A basic feeding program exists consisting of a bowl of maze meal (porridge) and sugar.

Accommodation: You might share a room with someone from a completely different culture which adds to the whole learning experience. Dormitory: This consists of 4 and 6 bed dorms. Meals: Breakfast is supplied on a self service basis. Volunteers can supply and prepare their own meals or enjoy meals in the lodge or local restaurants just a hop from your accommodation. You will be staying at the Volunteer Lodge in Jeffreys Bay more info All Africa J Bay Lodge
